Long Road Home

I’m back home.  The trip was short but nice.  We met up with many of my great aunts and uncles and 2nd and 3rd cousins (basically the family that we only see once every few years), and we had a mini impromptu family reunion.  It was bittersweet – as we usually make this trip with my grandma, and so there was a definite vacancy in the car and in the room.

We went to the town in which my grandma and grandpa were born and raised.  We drove down by the places where they had lived and the old building where my great grandpa had owned a shoe shop.  We drove to the cemetery where all of my great grandparents and great, great grandparents are buried along with many great and great great aunts and uncles.

It is a town that I have always loved.  It is a town that I could see myself moving to in a heartbeat.  I love that it is so laidback, and yet there is so much to do and see there.  I love the family connection that I feel when I am in that town.  I’ve always felt like that was a place I wanted to be connected to as well.  It is neat to be able to drive down a street and say, "oh yeah, my mom was born in that house right there" and "my grandma and grandpa were married over here."  It’s just a nice feeling.

Who knows – I have been looking at jobs in that area.  There are a lot of publishing houses there, and there are always teaching jobs anywhere, so it could go either way.

Right now, I’m tired.  Why does driving make you so tired?  I’ll post some pictures tomorrow sometime.
